Fakultatiivne

Fakultatiivne is an Estonian adjective that translates into English as "optional" or "voluntary." The term is commonly used in legal, administrative, and educational contexts to denote actions, requirements, or provisions that a person may choose to comply with or omit without incurring legal penalties or losing rights. In contrast to obligatory (kohustuslik) provisions, fakultatiivne elements provide flexibility and accommodate diverse circumstances.

In Estonian law, many administrative procedures include fakultatiivne elements that allow individuals to exercise discretion. For example, certain tax benefits or social security payments may be facultative, meaning a taxpayer or applicant may decide whether to opt in.
