The goal is to improve safety, increase the attractiveness of cycling, and integrate bicycles into the broader transport network.

Fahrradbereiche are typically part of a city's bicycle networks and are marked by road markings, signs, and, in some cases, physical separation from motor traffic. Their design emphasizes visible prioritization of the Radverkehr (bicycle traffic) at intersections, crossings, and demand areas such as school routes and commuting corridors. The term is also used in retail and commercial contexts to denote the bicycle department of a store (Fahrradbereich), where bicycles, parts, accessories, and maintenance services are displayed and offered.
