Fafödémeket, or edema of wooden structures, refers to the swelling that occurs in wood when it absorbs moisture. This phenomenon is a common concern in wooden buildings, furniture, and other wooden objects, particularly in humid environments or when exposed to water. The swelling is due to the hygroscopic nature of wood, meaning it attracts and holds water molecules. When water enters the wood's cellular structure, it causes the cellulose fibers to expand, leading to an increase in the wood's dimensions.

The extent of fafödémeket depends on several factors, including the type of wood, its moisture content, and the duration and intensity of moisture exposure. Different wood species have varying densities and cell structures, which influence their water absorption rates and swelling potential. For instance, hardwoods generally swell less than softwoods. Prolonged exposure to high humidity or direct water contact will result in more significant swelling than brief, intermittent exposure.
