Fackeln

Fackeln are handheld torches used to provide light or signal in darkness. They have been employed across cultures since antiquity for illumination, ceremonial use, and visibility during outdoor activities. A typical Fackel consists of a rigid shaft, usually wooden or metal, with a flame at the tip fed by a wick or cloth saturated with a flammable substance.

Historically, torches used fuels such as pitch, tar, rosin, animal fat, wax, or oil. The wick or cloth is designed to burn steadily, and on traditional torches the fuel is absorbed at the tip to sustain the flame. Modern variants may use wax- or oil-based fuels and incorporate fittings to control dripping and protect the hand. In many cultures, torches are crafted to be both functional and symbolic, with decorative and ceremonial qualities emphasized in public events.

Cultural and practical use of Fackeln includes processions, vigils, performances, and night-time signaling. In German-speaking regions, the term Fackel is common, and events known as Fackelzüge (torchlight processions) are part of various festivals and commemorations. Because open flames pose fire and smoke hazards, their use is subject to safety regulations and local laws, and many organizers opt for safety measures or alternatives where appropriate. Torches thus remain both a historical technology and a modern ceremonial symbol, balancing practical illumination with cultural tradition.
