The Facharbeiterprüfung, often translated as the "journeyman's examination" or "skilled worker examination," is a significant milestone in the German vocational training system. It marks the successful completion of an apprenticeship (Ausbildung) and certifies that an individual has acquired the necessary theoretical knowledge and practical skills in a specific trade or profession. This examination is typically conducted by the relevant Chamber of Industry and Commerce (Industrie- und Handelskammer - IHK) or Chamber of Crafts (Handwerkskammer - HWK), depending on the vocational field.

The structure of the Facharbeiterprüfung generally consists of both a theoretical and a practical component. The theoretical part assesses the candidate's understanding of subject-specific knowledge, general vocational principles, and sometimes business and social studies. The practical part, which is often the most crucial element, involves demonstrating proficiency in the skills learned during the apprenticeship. This might include performing specific tasks, creating a workpiece, or handling real-world scenarios relevant to the profession. Successful completion of the Facharbeiterprüfung leads to the awarding of a formal certificate, which is highly valued by employers in Germany and recognized internationally. It signifies a recognized level of qualification and opens doors to further career advancement, including specialization or entry into master craftsman training (Meisterprüfung).
