FX2FX2LP

FX2 and FX2LP are names used for Cypress Semiconductor’s EZ-USB FX2 family of USB peripheral controllers, later marketed under Infineon after the Cypress acquisition. These devices combine an 8051-based microcontroller core with a USB 2.0 peripheral interface and on-chip memory, and are designed to operate as USB peripherals connected to a host computer or embedded host.

Architecturally, the FX2/FX2LP provide a flexible data path between the USB host and device memory through a slave FIFO interface. This design enables high-throughput data streaming and the implementation of custom USB protocols without the need for a separate USB host controller. The FX2LP variant is the low-power version, optimized for battery-powered or energy-conscious applications, while maintaining the same overall feature set as the FX2.

Firmware on these devices runs on the on-chip RAM and is written to control USB endpoints, manage data transfer, and implement the device’s custom behavior. A range of development tools, evaluation boards, and firmware examples from Cypress support rapid prototyping and integration into a variety of products.

Common applications include data acquisition, imaging, audio, and other USB peripherals that require direct USB connectivity and efficient data transfer. The FX2/FX2LP lineage has been widely used in legacy designs and in some ongoing projects, though newer designs frequently migrate to Cypress’ FX3 or other USB controllers offering newer interfaces and improved performance or power profiles.
