Fnac traces its origins to 1954 in Paris, founded by André Essel and Max Théret. It began as a cooperative intended to improve purchasing terms for independent booksellers, a model linked to the idea of a Federation of Purchases. The name Fnac is traditionally associated with this buying federation, reflecting its roots in the book trade. Over the following decades the company broadened its range beyond books to multimedia and electronics, emerging as a major player in cultural retail.

Beyond selling products, Fnac has developed services such as loyalty programs, digital media access, event tickets, and extended warranties. The company has pursued a multichannel strategy, integrating its physical stores with online and mobile platforms to offer services like click-and-collect and home delivery.

In 2016 Fnac merged with the Darty electronics retailer to form Groupe Fnac Darty, creating a multinational with Fnac and Darty banners under common management. The group emphasizes cross-channel retail and leverages its combined product ranges and procurement network to compete in the European consumer electronics and cultural goods markets.
