Förhandsavgiften, often translated as advance fee, refers to a sum of money requested upfront by a person or entity before they provide a promised service, good, or benefit. This practice is common in various transactions, including business deals, financial services, and even certain legal proceedings. The intention behind a förhandsavgift is typically to secure a commitment from the recipient, cover initial costs, or act as a deposit to ensure the transaction is taken seriously.

However, the term förhandsavgift is also frequently associated with fraudulent schemes, commonly known as advance-fee fraud or Nigerian scams. In these scams, the perpetrator promises a large sum of money, a lucrative opportunity, or a valuable item to the victim. Before the promised reward can be delivered, the victim is asked to pay a series of förhandsavgifter to cover imaginary expenses such as taxes, processing fees, legal costs, or bribes. Once these fees are paid, the perpetrator disappears without delivering anything, leaving the victim with a financial loss.

It is crucial to distinguish between legitimate advance payments and fraudulent requests. In contrast, advance-fee fraud often involves vague promises, high-pressure tactics, requests for personal financial information, and a constant demand for more money.
