In risk assessment and safety discussions, exposurecausing elements are identified to understand how people or environments come into contact with a potential risk and to prioritize mitigation.

The term is not widely standardized in formal nomenclature, but it functions similarly to phrases like exposure-contributing or exposure-inducing factors. Exposurecausing elements can be chemical, biological, radiological, physical, or behavioral. Examples include volatile solvents that create airborne exposure, packaging designs that permit leaks, or work practices that increase contact with hazardous materials. Environmental conditions such as temperature, humidity, and airflow can also be exposurecausing by influencing how a substance is dispersed or retained.
