Expansieschuim, also known as polyurethane foam or spray foam insulation, is a versatile building material used for insulation and sealing. It is a two-component system that, when mixed and sprayed, expands rapidly to fill cavities and cracks. This expansion creates a monolithic barrier that effectively insulates and prevents air leakage. The foam consists of isocyanates and polyols, which react upon contact to form a polymer matrix.

There are two main types of expansieschuim: open-cell and closed-cell. Open-cell foam is softer and more flexible, with a lower R-value per inch compared to closed-cell foam. It allows for some moisture vapor to pass through. Closed-cell foam is denser and more rigid, offering a higher R-value and acting as a vapor barrier. This rigidity also adds structural strength to the application.

Expansieschuim is applied using specialized spray equipment, ensuring a precise and even distribution. Its ability to expand and conform to irregular shapes makes it ideal for insulating attics, crawl spaces, walls, and around windows and doors. It is effective in reducing energy costs by minimizing heat transfer and preventing drafts. Additionally, its sealing properties can help improve indoor air quality by blocking the entry of dust, pollen, and other airborne contaminants. Proper ventilation and personal protective equipment are essential during application due to the chemical nature of the components.
