Exotización

Exotización is a term used to describe the process of perceiving or presenting something, often a person, culture, or object, as foreign, unusual, or particularly interesting due to its perceived difference from the norm. This perception is often rooted in stereotypes and a lack of deeper understanding, leading to a romanticized or fetishized view of the "other." Exotization can occur across various contexts, including art, literature, tourism, and social interactions. It frequently highlights superficial characteristics while ignoring complex realities.

The concept of exotization is closely related to Orientalism and other forms of cultural othering, where dominant cultures define and represent marginalized cultures in simplified and often inaccurate ways. This can lead to the objectification of individuals or groups, reducing them to mere curiosities rather than recognizing their full humanity and agency. While sometimes intended to express admiration or fascination, exotization can inadvertently perpetuate harmful stereotypes and contribute to the marginalization of those being exoticized. It can also create a demand for experiences or products that cater to these exoticized perceptions, often benefiting the dominant culture more than the one being represented.
