Exception handling is the practice of designing software so that errors and other abnormal conditions can be detected, reported, and managed without corrupting program state. It aims to separate the normal control flow from error handling, enabling errors to bubble up to an appropriate level or be transformed into meaningful failure information.

Most languages implement exception handling with constructs such as try blocks, catch (or except) blocks to handle specific exception types, and finally (or cleanup) code that runs whether or not an exception occurred. When an exception is thrown, control transfers to the nearest matching handler; if none is found, the program terminates. Some languages distinguish checked exceptions that must be declared or caught from unchecked exceptions that can occur at runtime.

Exception safety concerns resource management. Patterns such as resource acquisition is initialization (RAII) in C++, or language features that automatically release resources (like Java's try-with-resources and Python's with statements) help ensure proper cleanup even when errors occur. Practices include avoiding throwing exceptions for normal control flow, catching specific exceptions, and rethrowing or wrapping exceptions with contextual information.

Best practices emphasize reliable handling at the appropriate level, minimal disruption to normal flow, and clear error reporting. Overuse or broad catching can obscure bugs and hurt performance. Documentation and consistent error codes or messages support debugging and user feedback.
