Evzones
The Evzones are an elite ceremonial unit of the Hellenic Army. Their primary role is the guarding of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the Presidential Mansion in Athens, Greece. These soldiers are distinguished by their traditional uniform, which includes a fustanella, a pleated kilt-like garment, tsarouchia, decorative leather shoes with pompoms, and an embroidered vest. The uniform is a reinterpretation of the clothing worn by klephts, irregular soldiers who fought the Ottoman Empire in the 19th century.
The selection process for Evzones is rigorous, with candidates often chosen for their height and physical build.
