Europeanorigin, in a geo-demographic sense, denotes descent, cultural heritage, or demographic categorization linked to Europe. The term is used in academic research, statistics, and policy to discuss populations with European ancestry or affiliation. Because definitions vary by country and purpose, "European origin" can refer to geographic origin, ethnicity, or self-identified heritage rather than a fixed biological category.

Genetic and archaeological evidence shows that modern Europeans descend from multiple ancestral waves. After early hunter-gatherers inhabited the continent, Neolithic farmers from the Near East spread into Europe, followed by pastoralists from the Pontic-Caspian steppe during the late Bronze Age. Together these sources created regional diversity, with varying proportions of hunter-gatherer, farmer, and steppe ancestry across Northern, Western, Southern, and Eastern Europe. Language families, notably Indo-European, also shaped cultural identity.

Historically, European origin has been linked to continuities and changes in language, religion, law, and institutions, from classical antiquity through medieval Christendom, the Renaissance, and modern nation-states. In contemporary contexts, the label is often used for demographic analysis, migration policy, and social integration research. Critics caution that origin-based categories can oversimplify ancestry and risk reifying ethnic or racial stereotypes, especially when used to justify exclusion or discrimination.
