Etüleenmonomeeristi refers to the monomeric form of ethylene, a simple organic compound with the chemical formula C2H4. Ethylene is a colorless gas at room temperature and pressure, characterized by its slightly sweet odor. It is a fundamental building block in the petrochemical industry, primarily used as a precursor for the production of polyethylene, the most common type of plastic worldwide.

The structure of ethylene consists of two carbon atoms connected by a double bond, with each carbon atom bonded to two hydrogen atoms. This double bond is a key feature, making ethylene highly reactive and prone to polymerization. In this process, many ethylene molecules link together to form long chains, creating the polymer polyethylene.

The industrial production of ethylene primarily occurs through the steam cracking of hydrocarbons, such as ethane, propane, naphtha, or gas oil. This high-temperature process breaks down larger hydrocarbon molecules into smaller ones, including ethylene. Ethylene can also be obtained as a byproduct of petroleum refining and coal gasification.

Beyond polyethylene production, etüleenmonomeeristi finds applications in the synthesis of other important chemicals, including ethylene oxide, ethylene glycol, and vinyl chloride. Ethylene oxide is used to produce detergents and solvents, while ethylene glycol is a key component in antifreeze and polyester fibers. Vinyl chloride is the monomer used to make polyvinyl chloride (PVC).
