Etyleniglykolia refers to the chemical compound ethylene glycol, also known as ethane-1,2-diol. It is a clear, colorless, odorless, viscous liquid with a sweet taste. Ethylene glycol is a simple diol, a type of alcohol containing two hydroxyl groups. Its chemical formula is C2H6O2.

The primary use of ethylene glycol is as an antifreeze in automobile cooling systems. It works by lowering the freezing point of water, thus preventing the coolant from freezing in cold temperatures. It also raises the boiling point of water, which helps to prevent the engine from overheating in hot weather. Due to its relatively low cost and effectiveness, it is widely employed for this purpose.

Beyond its use in antifreeze, ethylene glycol is also a precursor in the production of polyester fibers and resins. Polyethylene terephthalate (PET), a common plastic used for beverage bottles and clothing, is synthesized using ethylene glycol. It also finds applications in deicing fluids for aircraft, as a humectant in some products, and in the manufacture of certain dyes and inks.

Ethylene glycol is toxic if ingested. Its sweet taste can make it appealing to children and pets, leading to accidental poisoning. In the body, it is metabolized into toxic compounds, primarily glycolic acid and oxalic acid, which can cause severe kidney damage, metabolic acidosis, and other serious health problems. Therefore, proper storage and handling are crucial.
