Ettuthokaiera
Ettuthokaiera is a Tamil term that translates literally to "eight hands." It is a conceptual descriptor, most commonly associated with the Hindu deity Shiva, when depicted in his form as Nataraja, the cosmic dancer. In this iconic representation, Shiva is often shown with multiple arms, typically eight, though other numbers can also be seen. These numerous hands symbolize Shiva's omnipotence and his multifaceted cosmic functions, including creation, preservation, destruction, illusion, and liberation. Each hand often holds an object or performs a gesture, such as a drum (damaru) for creation, a flame for destruction, or a raised foot to crush ignorance and grant liberation. The concept of Ettuthokaiera therefore emphasizes the divine power and the comprehensive nature of Shiva's cosmic dance, which is believed to sustain the universe. Beyond religious iconography, the term can be used metaphorically in Tamil literature and discourse to describe someone or something possessing immense capability, versatility, or the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously, akin to having many hands at their disposal.
