Etnik

Etnik is a term used in several languages to denote ethnicity or ethnic groups. In Indonesian and Malay, etnik is an adjective and noun meaning relating to ethnicity or ethnic groups; the term is cognate with English "ethnic" and derives from the Greek ethnos via Latin and European languages. It is used in everyday speech and in official terminology such as "kelompok etnik" (ethnic group), "identitas etnik" (ethnic identity).

Ethnicity refers to shared cultural traits, language, ancestry, religion, history, or customs that bind people, as well as to social constructs that influence group membership. Ethnicity is often fluid; individuals may identify with multiple ethnic identities; boundaries between groups can be porous, influenced by migration, intermarriage, and politics.

In policy and research, etnik categories are used in demographic data, minority rights, and social programs. They play a role in cultural preservation, language policy, and education. Debates on ethnicity address essentialism, ethnonationalism, discrimination, and integration.

In discussions of language and ethnography, etnik contexts can reflect inclusion or exclusion; some scholars advocate for self-identification and multidimensional approaches to ethnicity.

As a capitalized proper noun, Etnik may appear as a name or title; however, there is no single universally recognized entity by that name in standard references.
