Etiketteringsschema is a formal framework used to structure and standardize the labeling information that appears on products, packaging, or data collections. It defines what information must be present, in which fields, and how those fields are formatted, with the goal of ensuring clear communication, traceability, and regulatory compliance.

The scope of an etiketteringsschema can cover a wide range of domains, including food and beverage labeling, consumer goods, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, and electronics. It can also apply to data labeling in machine learning and data management, where labels annotate items in a consistent, machine-readable way. Key elements typically included are product name, unique identifier, batch or lot number, production and expiry dates, storage conditions, and origin. Additional fields may specify ingredients, allergens, nutritional information, warnings, language variants, and symbols or pictograms. The schema may prescribe data types, permitted values, and encoding for barcodes or digital tags such as QR codes.

Standards and governance are important components. A labeling schema often aligns with sector standards and regulatory requirements, such as barcoding systems (for example, GS1 with GTIN), language and accessibility considerations, and safety or hazard information where applicable. Versioning, provenance, and change management help maintain consistency over time and across products.

Implementation typically involves designing the schema in collaboration with regulatory, quality, and product teams, mapping it to data sources, validating data quality, and establishing governance and auditing processes. Benefits include improved consistency, faster compliance checks, and easier global distribution, while challenges can include regional variation, ongoing updates, and multilingual needs.
