Esélyhányadot, often translated as "odds ratio," is a statistical measure used in observational studies and clinical research to quantify the association between an exposure and an outcome. It is particularly common in case-control studies.

The odds ratio is calculated by dividing the odds of exposure among individuals with the outcome by the odds of exposure among individuals without the outcome. In simpler terms, it compares the odds of having the disease or condition for those who were exposed to a certain factor, versus the odds of having the disease for those who were not exposed.

An odds ratio of 1 indicates no association between the exposure and the outcome. An odds ratio greater than 1 suggests that the exposure is associated with an increased odds of the outcome. Conversely, an odds ratio less than 1 suggests that the exposure is associated with decreased odds of the outcome.

For example, if an odds ratio for smoking and lung cancer is calculated to be 10, it means that the odds of developing lung cancer are 10 times higher for smokers compared to non-smokers. It is important to note that the odds ratio does not directly represent risk, but rather the odds of an event occurring. While it can approximate the relative risk in certain situations, especially when the outcome is rare, it is not the same as relative risk. Interpretation of the odds ratio should always consider the study design and potential confounding factors.
