Esteettömyysdirektiivi

The Esteettömyysdirektiivi, or Accessibility Directive, is a European Union directive aimed at improving the accessibility of products and services for people with disabilities. It was adopted in 2019 and requires Member States to implement measures that ensure a wide range of everyday products and services are accessible.

The directive covers various sectors, including information and communication technology, transport, energy, and emergency communication services. It mandates that common technical solutions and standards be applied to make these offerings usable by a broader population, including those with visual, auditory, cognitive, or physical impairments.

Key aspects of the directive include requirements for accessible websites and mobile applications, accessible public transport vehicles and infrastructure, and accessible electronic communication services. It also addresses the need for accessible building designs and the availability of accessible information in various formats.

The goal of the Esteettömyysdirektiivi is to promote equal opportunities and participation for people with disabilities by removing barriers and fostering a more inclusive society. Member States are required to transpose the directive into their national laws by a specific deadline, ensuring its practical implementation across the EU. The directive encourages the use of harmonized European standards to facilitate market access and prevent fragmentation.
