Eslatmoq

Eslatmoq is a term that originates from the Chukchi language, spoken by the indigenous people of the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug in Russia. It refers to a traditional Chukchi method of hunting seals, particularly ringed seals, which are a significant food source for the Chukchi people. The term "eslatmoq" translates to "to hunt seals" in English.

The eslatmoq method involves the use of a small, lightweight boat called a "umiaq," which is propelled by a single oar. Hunters would use this boat to approach the seals, which are known to be curious and often approach humans. The hunters would then throw a harpoon, called a "tuluk," at the seals. The harpoon is designed to be lightweight and easy to throw, and it is often made from bone or antler.

Once the seal is harpooned, the hunter would quickly retrieve the harpoon and drag the seal onto the ice or onto a nearby beach. The seal would then be skinned and the meat would be processed for storage or immediate consumption. The eslatmoq method is an important part of Chukchi culture and tradition, and it continues to be practiced by some Chukchi people today. However, it is also recognized as a vulnerable practice, as the seal population is declining due to a variety of factors, including climate change and overhunting.
