These geological hazards occur due to various factors, including gravity, weathering, water infiltration, and human activities. They can range from slow, gradual movements to sudden, catastrophic collapses, posing significant risks to infrastructure, ecosystems, and human life.

The primary causes of escorregamentos include heavy rainfall, which saturates the ground and reduces its stability, as well as seismic activity, such as earthquakes, which can trigger slope failures.
