Ersatzform

Ersatzform is a term used chiefly in German-language scholarly and technical writing to denote a substitute form or placeholder that stands in for another form when the original is missing, illegible, or unsuitable. The word combines Ersatz (replacement) and Form (form). In practice, an Ersatzform functions as a pragmatic device to maintain analytical continuity without asserting certainty about the authentic form.

In philology and manuscript editing, an Ersatzform may be inserted for a word or character whose reading cannot be established confidently. Editors label the substitute and often provide a note explaining the source of uncertainty, along with a transcription or gloss.

In typography and digital text, Ersatzform can describe a fallback glyph or substituted character used when the preferred font or encoding does not provide the required symbol. In computing and data modeling, Ersatzform may refer to a placeholder value used in templates, test data, or datasets to stand in for a missing or not-yet-known value.

Because usage varies by field, there is no single formal standard for how Ersatzform is marked. It is typically clear from context or accompanying notes that the form is provisional, not authoritative.
