Erottelupäätökset, meaning "separation decisions" in Finnish, refers to the legal and administrative processes that determine the separation of a couple who are still legally married. This differs from divorce, which is the complete dissolution of the marriage. In Finland, separation can be a necessary precursor to divorce and serves to establish a legal framework for the period before the final dissolution.

The primary purpose of an erottelupäätös is to regulate practical matters arising from the couple's decision to live apart. This typically includes arrangements for children, such as custody, visitation rights, and child support. It also addresses financial aspects, including the division of assets and liabilities, spousal support (alimony), and the right to reside in the marital home. The decision provides legal clarity and a basis for resolving disputes during the separation period.

To obtain an erottelupäätös, one or both spouses must file an application with the district court. The court will then review the case, taking into account the well-being of any children involved and the financial circumstances of both parties. While cooperation between spouses can expedite the process, the court can make decisions even if there is disagreement. The separation period legally lasts for a minimum of one year. After this period, either spouse can apply for a divorce, and the previous erottelupäätös will often form the basis for the divorce decree, particularly regarding the division of property.
