Erityiskoulutuksella, often translated as special education or special needs education, refers to the education provided to children and young people who have disabilities or learning difficulties that prevent them from fully participating in mainstream education. The goal of special education is to provide tailored support and instruction to meet the unique needs of each student, enabling them to learn, develop, and achieve their full potential. This can involve specialized teaching methods, adapted learning materials, assistive technology, and individual support plans.

In many countries, special education is a legal right, ensuring that all students, regardless of their abilities, have access to appropriate educational services. The provision of special education can vary significantly, ranging from dedicated special schools to inclusive classrooms within mainstream settings with support staff. The focus is often on identifying a student's specific challenges, such as intellectual disabilities, physical impairments, sensory impairments, emotional and behavioral disorders, or specific learning disabilities like dyslexia and ADHD.

Assessment is a crucial part of special education, involving a multidisciplinary team of educators, psychologists, and other specialists to understand a student's strengths and weaknesses. Based on these assessments, individualized education programs (IEPs) or similar plans are developed. These plans outline specific learning goals, the strategies and services to be used to achieve them, and how progress will be monitored.
