Erittelylasi

Erittelylasi, also known as erythroleukemia or erythroleukemia virus, is a rare and highly aggressive form of leukemia that primarily affects dogs. It is caused by a retrovirus called canine erythroleukemia virus (CELV), which is transmitted through the bite of a tick or through contaminated blood transfusions. The disease is characterized by the rapid proliferation of immature red blood cells in the bone marrow, leading to anemia and other symptoms such as weakness, lethargy, and pale gums.

Diagnosis of erittelylasi typically involves a combination of clinical signs, blood tests, and bone marrow examination. Treatment options are limited and often ineffective, as the virus can become drug-resistant. Supportive care, such as blood transfusions and management of anemia, may be provided to alleviate symptoms and improve quality of life.

Prevention of erittelylasi involves avoiding tick bites and ensuring that blood transfusions are obtained from screened and tested donors. Vaccination is not currently available for erittelylasi, but ongoing research aims to develop effective preventive measures. The prognosis for dogs with erittelylasi is generally poor, with a median survival time of only a few months. Early detection and supportive care can help manage symptoms and prolong life, but the disease remains a significant challenge for veterinary medicine.
