Erilliskeräys refers to the separate collection of different types of waste materials in Finland. This system is a key component of the country's waste management strategy, aiming to increase recycling rates and reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills or incineration. The primary goal is to recover valuable materials for reuse and to treat hazardous waste appropriately.

Common categories for separate collection include paper and cardboard, glass packaging, metal packaging, plastic packaging, biowaste (food scraps and other organic waste), and mixed waste. Some municipalities also have specific collection points for hazardous waste, electrical and electronic equipment, batteries, textiles, and bulky waste.

Households are typically provided with different bins or collection bags for various waste streams. Biowaste is often collected separately for composting or biogas production. Paper and cardboard are processed into new paper products. Glass and metal packaging are recycled into new items of the same material. Plastic packaging is sorted and either recycled into new plastic products or used for energy recovery. Mixed waste, which cannot be further sorted or recycled, is usually incinerated for energy production.

The effectiveness of erilliskeräys relies on citizen participation and convenient collection systems. Municipalities and waste management companies are responsible for organizing the collection, transportation, and processing of separated waste. The system contributes to a more sustainable circular economy by conserving resources and minimizing environmental impact.
