ErdklimaHistorie is the field that studies the history of Earth’s climate across geologic time. It investigates how global temperatures, precipitation patterns, ice sheets, and sea levels have changed and how these changes relate to shifts in atmospheric composition, plate tectonics, solar input, orbital cycles, and volcanic activity. The term encompasses the long-term natural variability of the climate system as well as abrupt transitions.

Reconstructing Earth’s climate relies on proxy data obtained from ice cores, ocean and lake sediments, tree rings, pollen, and minerals, combined with geochemical and isotopic analyses. Climate models are used to test hypotheses about forcing mechanisms and to understand past responses to different drivers. The most recent major events include the rapid warming at the Paleocene–Eocene Thermal Maximum and, in the present, rapid anthropogenic warming driven by greenhouse gas emissions. These past episodes provide context for current climate dynamics and future scenarios.
