It is a concept that describes events or situations that are not expected to happen based on probability theory or common sense. The term can be applied in various contexts, from scientific discussions of statistical significance to everyday estimations of risk.

In statistics, an event is considered improbable if its probability is very low. This low probability can be calculated using mathematical formulas based on the number of possible outcomes and the number of favorable outcomes. For example, winning the lottery is an event with a very low probability, making it highly improbable. The concept is crucial in hypothesis testing, where researchers aim to determine if observed results are due to chance or a genuine effect. If a result is highly improbable under the null hypothesis, it suggests the null hypothesis can be rejected.

Beyond strict statistical definitions, epätodennäköisyys is often used more subjectively. It can describe an unlikely coincidence, a far-fetched scenario, or something that defies common expectations. For instance, a situation where two unrelated people independently arrive at the same unique idea at the same time might be described as highly improbable.
