Epäparametreisissa

Epäparametreisissa is a Finnish term that translates to "non-parametric" in English, often used in the context of statistics and machine learning. It refers to statistical methods or models that do not make assumptions about the underlying distribution of the data. Unlike parametric methods, which assume data follows a specific distribution (like a normal distribution), non-parametric methods are more flexible and can be applied to a wider range of data types and shapes.

The key characteristic of non-parametric approaches is their reliance on ranks, order statistics, or frequencies rather than specific distributional parameters. This makes them robust to outliers and suitable for small sample sizes where distributional assumptions might be difficult or impossible to verify. Examples of non-parametric tests include the Mann-Whitney U test, the Wilcoxon signed-rank test, and the Kruskal-Wallis test. In machine learning, non-parametric models like decision trees, support vector machines (with non-linear kernels), and k-nearest neighbors are widely used.

The advantage of epäparametreisissa methods lies in their ability to adapt to the data without being constrained by potentially incorrect assumptions.
