Epäferroihin, also known as non-ferrous metals, are metallic materials that do not contain iron. This classification distinguishes them from ferrous metals, which are primarily iron-based alloys like steel and cast iron. The properties of non-ferrous metals vary widely depending on the specific element or alloy. Many are known for their resistance to corrosion, excellent conductivity, lower density, and attractive appearance.

Common examples of non-ferrous metals include aluminum, copper, lead, nickel, tin, zinc, and precious metals like gold, silver, and platinum. Each has unique applications. Aluminum is lightweight and corrosion-resistant, making it ideal for aircraft, vehicles, and packaging. Copper is an excellent conductor of electricity and heat, essential for wiring and plumbing. Lead is dense and malleable, used in batteries and radiation shielding. Nickel is highly resistant to corrosion and high temperatures, found in stainless steel alloys and batteries. Tin is known for its solderability and non-toxicity, used in food cans and plating. Zinc is primarily used for galvanizing steel to prevent rust.

The processing and recycling of non-ferrous metals are significant industries. Their distinct properties and widespread use make them indispensable in modern manufacturing and technology. Unlike ferrous metals, non-ferrous metals do not typically exhibit magnetic properties.
