Epoxy-containing refers to substances that include epoxy groups, most commonly in epoxy resins and related polymers. An epoxy group is a highly strained three-membered oxirane ring that can react with curing agents to form a crosslinked network. The most widely used epoxy resins are diglycidyl ethers of bisphenol A (DGEBA) and related monomers.

Chemistry and curing of epoxy-containing materials rely on ring-opening reactions. Epoxy groups react with curing agents such as amines, acid anhydrides, phenolics, or alcohols, often with catalysts or heat. The result is a thermoset polymer with extensive crosslinking, yielding improved mechanical strength, chemical resistance, and electrical insulation. Curing conditions and formulations determine properties such as glass transition temperature, flexibility, and toughness.

Processing and applications vary by form. In liquid resins, epoxy systems are mixed with a hardener and cured under controlled temperatures to produce solid materials. Common applications include protective coatings, structural and aerospace adhesives, and composite matrices for fiber-reinforced polymers. They are also used in potting encapsulations, electronics, and sealants due to their dimensional stability and adhesion.

Advantages and limitations include strong adhesion to diverse substrates, good chemical and solvent resistance, and excellent electrical insulation. Limitations include potential brittleness without flexibilizers, sensitivity to moisture, and exothermic curing that can require careful temperature control. UV stability varies and some epoxies yellow over time without stabilizers.

Safety and environmental notes emphasize skin sensitization and respiratory irritation hazards during handling. Proper ventilation, gloves, and PPE are recommended. Epoxy resins are generally not readily biodegradable, and disposal or recycling follows applicable hazardous waste regulations.
