Epixerus

Epixerus is a genus of arboreal squirrels native to Africa. The only living species in this genus is Epixerus ebii, commonly known as the palm squirrel or Ebi's palm squirrel. This squirrel is found in the rainforests of West and Central Africa, inhabiting areas with abundant palm trees.

The palm squirrel is a medium-sized rodent, characterized by its reddish-brown to greyish fur, which can vary in intensity. It possesses a long, bushy tail that aids in balance as it navigates through the trees. Its diet primarily consists of fruits, nuts, seeds, and insects. Epixerus ebii is diurnal, meaning it is most active during the day. They are solitary animals and are not known for forming large social groups.

The species is relatively widespread within its range, though specific population figures are not extensively documented. Habitat loss due to deforestation poses a potential threat to its long-term survival, as its arboreal lifestyle is dependent on forested environments. Conservation efforts, where implemented, focus on protecting these natural habitats. The genus Epixerus was first described by Johann Baptist von Spix in 1823.
