Epiteelisolun, often translated as epithelial cell, refers to a fundamental cell type found in epithelial tissue. Epithelial tissue forms the covering of all internal and external surfaces of the body, lining organs, body cavities, and ducts. These cells are characterized by their close proximity to each other, forming continuous sheets. They exhibit distinct polarity, with an apical surface facing the external environment or lumen of an organ and a basal surface attached to underlying connective tissue via a basement membrane.

Epithelial cells perform a variety of crucial functions, including protection, secretion, absorption, excretion, filtration, diffusion, and sensory reception. Their specific role depends on their location and the type of epithelial tissue they comprise. For example, epithelial cells lining the digestive tract are specialized for absorption, while those in the skin provide a protective barrier.

Structurally, epithelial cells can vary in shape, being squamous (flat), cuboidal (cube-shaped), or columnar (taller than they are wide). They can also be arranged in single layers (simple epithelium) or multiple layers (stratified epithelium). The surface of epithelial cells may also possess specialized structures like cilia or microvilli, further enhancing their functional capabilities.
