Epileptológia is the specialized field of medicine dedicated to the study and treatment of epilepsy. It encompasses the diagnosis, management, and research of seizure disorders. Epileptologists, who are neurologists with advanced training in this area, work to understand the underlying causes of epilepsy, which can range from genetic factors to brain injuries.

The diagnostic process typically involves a thorough medical history, neurological examination, and often electroencephalography (EEG) to record brain activity. Neuroimaging techniques such as MRI or CT scans are also frequently used to identify structural abnormalities in the brain. Understanding the specific type of epilepsy and the seizure patterns is crucial for effective treatment.

Treatment strategies in epileptology are varied and depend on the individual patient's condition. Anti-epileptic drugs (AEDs) are the cornerstone of management for many, aiming to reduce seizure frequency and severity. For patients whose epilepsy is not adequately controlled by medication, other options may be explored. These can include dietary therapies like the ketogenic diet, neurostimulation devices such as vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) or responsive neurostimulation (RNS), and in select cases, epilepsy surgery to remove the source of seizures.
