Ephrinbearing

Ephrinbearing is a term used to describe cells that express ephrin ligands on their surface. Ephrins are a family of cell surface proteins that play crucial roles in cell-cell communication and signaling. They are involved in a wide range of developmental processes, including tissue patterning, cell migration, axon guidance, and cell adhesion.

Ephrinbearing cells interact with cells expressing Eph receptor tyrosine kinases. This interaction triggers bidirectional signaling. The ephrin ligand on one cell binds to the Eph receptor on the other, initiating signaling within the Eph receptor-expressing cell. Simultaneously, the Eph receptor can also bind to the ephrin ligand, initiating signaling within the ephrin-expressing cell. This reciprocal signaling mechanism is known as Eph-ephrin signaling and is essential for regulating cellular behavior and organizing tissues during development and in adult organisms.

The expression of ephrins and Eph receptors is highly regulated in terms of both timing and location. This precise control allows for the intricate coordination of cellular events. For example, during nervous system development, Eph-ephrin signaling is critical for guiding growing axons to their correct targets and for establishing the precise connections between neurons. In the immune system, it plays a role in regulating the migration and positioning of immune cells. Dysregulation of Eph-ephrin signaling has been implicated in various diseases, including cancer, where it can affect tumor growth, invasion, and metastasis.
