Ependymale

Ependymale is an adjective related to the ependyma, the thin cellular lining of the brain’s ventricles and the spinal cord’s central canal. In English, the corresponding term is ependymal; ependymale is used in some other languages to describe structures, tissues, or conditions associated with the ependyma.

The ependyma consists of a single layer of ciliated or microvilliated cells that covers the inner surfaces of the ventricular system and central canal. Ependymal cells arise from the neural tube and play a role in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) dynamics, including movement and exchange between CSF and neural tissue. They contribute to the homeostatic environment of the CNS and are part of the neural stem cell niche in certain developmental or regenerative contexts.

Clinically, the term is often encountered in relation to ependymal tumors, such as ependymomas. Ependymomas arise from ependymal cells and can occur in the brain, most commonly in the posterior fossa of children, or along the spinal cord in adults. Subependymomas are slower-growing, typically considered WHO grade I, whereas classic ependymomas and anaplastic ependymomas represent higher grades (II–III) with a broader range of aggressiveness. Symptoms usually reflect tumor location and may include headaches from hydrocephalus, nausea, balance or gait disturbances, and sensory or motor changes.

Management typically centers on surgical resection, with adjuvant radiotherapy for higher-grade tumors or incompletely resected cases. Chemotherapy has a limited role and is usually reserved for specific circumstances or younger patients. Prognosis varies with tumor grade, location, extent of resection, and overall patient health.
