The concept encompasses experimental and computational approaches used to identify, characterize, and deploy enzymes for research and industrial applications.

Experimental strategies include activity-based screening of libraries, substrate- or product-guided assays, high-throughput screening, and the use of metagenomic or transcriptomic libraries. In silico methods involve genome mining, sequence similarity analyses, motif and domain analysis, structure-based function prediction, and docking or machine learning–based activity inference. Integrated workflows often combine multiple steps: define a target activity, build or curate a candidate library, screen for activity, identify hits by sequencing, and perform biochemical characterization and optimization.

Applications of enzymessuch span biocatalysis, environmental biotechnology, and industrial processing.
