Enterectomy

Enterectomy is a surgical procedure that involves the removal of a portion of the intestine. This procedure is typically performed to address diseases or injuries affecting the small or large intestine. The specific section of the intestine removed depends on the location and nature of the problem. Common reasons for an enterectomy include blockages caused by tumors, hernias, or adhesions, as well as inflammatory bowel diseases like Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis, severe infections, or irreparable damage from trauma.

During an enterectomy, the surgeon first identifies the affected segment of the intestine. This diseased or damaged portion is then carefully dissected and removed. Following the removal, the two remaining healthy ends of the intestine are reconnected. This reconnection process is known as an anastomosis. The goal of the anastomosis is to restore the continuity of the digestive tract, allowing food and waste to pass through normally. In some cases, if the remaining ends cannot be immediately joined, a temporary ostomy may be created, where one end of the intestine is brought to the surface of the abdomen to divert waste.

The recovery period following an enterectomy can vary depending on the extent of the surgery and the patient's overall health. Patients typically remain in the hospital for several days to weeks. Post-operative care often includes pain management, intravenous fluids, and a gradual reintroduction of food as the digestive system heals. Potential complications can include infection, leakage at the anastomosis site, or problems with bowel function.
