Enlucido

Enlucido is a Spanish term that translates to "plastering" or "rendering" in English. It refers to the process of applying a layer of plaster or a similar cementitious material to walls and ceilings. This coating serves multiple purposes, primarily for finishing and protecting the underlying structural elements.

Traditionally, enlucido was made from lime, sand, and water. Modern enlucido often incorporates cement for increased strength and durability. The application is typically done in multiple coats. The first coat, often called the "render coat" or "scratch coat," provides a base and adheres to the substrate. Subsequent coats smooth and level the surface. The final coat, known as the "skim coat," is applied thinly to achieve a smooth and even finish, ready for painting or other decorative treatments.

Enlucido is a common practice in construction and renovation throughout Spanish-speaking countries. It is used on both interior and exterior surfaces. For exterior walls, enlucido provides protection against weather elements and can be colored or textured for aesthetic purposes.
