Engiadina

Engiadina is the Romansh name for the Upper Engadine valley in the canton of Graubünden, Switzerland. Located in the Swiss Alps, it is known for its stunning natural beauty, characterized by high mountain peaks, pristine lakes, and alpine meadows. The valley stretches from the Maloja Pass in the southwest to the border with the Lower Engadine near Zernez in the northeast.

The region is a popular tourist destination, attracting visitors year-round. In winter, it is renowned for its world-class skiing resorts, including St. Moritz, Pontresina, and Samedan, offering extensive slopes and excellent snow conditions. Summer activities include hiking, mountain biking, sailing, and windsurfing on the numerous lakes, such as Lake Sils, Lake Silvaplana, and Lake St. Moritz. The high-altitude environment also makes it a favored location for training by professional athletes.

Engiadina has a rich cultural heritage, deeply rooted in the Romansh language and traditions. Romansh, one of Switzerland's four national languages, is still spoken by a significant portion of the population in the Engadine. The region's history is also marked by its strategic importance as a transit route through the Alps. Traditional architecture, characterized by stone houses with sgraffito decorations, is a common sight in the picturesque villages scattered throughout the valley. The Swiss National Park, established in 1914, is situated in the northeastern part of the Engadine, protecting a vast area of alpine wilderness.
