Energieschranke
Energieschranke is a German policy measure introduced in late 2022 in response to the large‑scale energy crisis triggered by the decrease in Russian gas supplies. The measure, formally known as the “Energieschranke zur Eindämmung der Belastung des Stromnetzes,” sets quantitative limits on the use of electricity in certain industrial and heating processes to reduce overall consumption and to encourage a quicker shift towards renewable energy sources. It is enforced by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action together with regional network operators, and it applies mainly to high‑energy users such as the steel industry, large food processing plants, and district heating systems that rely heavily on synchronous power generation.
