Endothelinitis

Endothelitis is a medical term describing inflammation of the endothelium, which is the inner lining of blood vessels and lymphatic vessels. This lining is composed of a single layer of cells called endothelial cells. Endothelitis can affect various parts of the body and can be caused by a range of factors, including infections, autoimmune diseases, and certain medical treatments.

The inflammation of the endothelium can lead to a breakdown of the barrier function of the blood vessel wall. This can result in increased permeability, allowing fluid and inflammatory cells to leak into the surrounding tissues, causing swelling and damage. It can also contribute to the formation of blood clots within the vessels. Symptoms of endothelitis vary depending on the location and severity of the inflammation but can include redness, swelling, pain, and impaired function of the affected organ or limb.

Diagnosing endothelitis often involves a combination of clinical evaluation, laboratory tests to identify the underlying cause, and sometimes imaging studies. Treatment focuses on addressing the root cause of the inflammation, such as administering antibiotics for infections, immunosuppressive drugs for autoimmune conditions, or discontinuing offending medications. Management also aims to reduce inflammation and prevent complications like thrombosis or organ damage.
