Endoteerneoodus refers to the internal temperature regulation mechanisms of an organism. Organisms that exhibit endothermy, often referred to as warm-blooded animals, can generate heat internally to maintain a stable body temperature independent of the external environment. This process is crucial for sustaining metabolic functions, especially in variable or cold climates.

The primary organ responsible for generating heat is the liver, which has a high metabolic rate. Muscles also contribute significantly through shivering, involuntary contractions that produce heat. Furthermore, changes in metabolic rate can be adjusted to increase or decrease heat production as needed. Brown adipose tissue, particularly in newborns and hibernating animals, is another specialized tissue for rapid heat generation through a process called non-shivering thermogenesis.

Endothermy allows for a consistent internal environment, which optimizes enzyme activity and physiological processes, leading to higher and more sustained levels of activity compared to ectothermic (cold-blooded) animals. This also enables endotherms to thrive in a wider range of habitats and to be active at all times of day, regardless of ambient temperatures. However, maintaining a stable internal temperature requires a significant energy expenditure, making endotherms require a higher caloric intake than ectotherms of similar size.
