Endodontidae

Endodontidae is a family of terrestrial gastropod mollusks commonly known as the root-mouth snails. These small to medium-sized snails are found in tropical and subtropical regions around the world, with a particular concentration in the Indo-Pacific and Neotropical realms. Their shells are typically coiled and can vary in shape from trochiform to discoidal, often exhibiting prominent ribs or other sculpture. A distinguishing feature of this family, from which they derive their name, is the presence of a ridge or "tooth" on the inner lip of the aperture, which is thought to aid in preventing prey from escaping.

The diet of Endodontidae species is varied, though many are considered detritivores or omnivores, feeding on decaying plant matter, fungi, and sometimes small invertebrates. They generally inhabit moist environments such as leaf litter, under rocks, and on the bark of trees. Reproduction is typically sexual, with many species being hermaphroditic, possessing both male and female reproductive organs. The eggs are usually laid in clutches in sheltered, damp locations.

Endodontidae plays a role in their ecosystems as decomposers and as a food source for other animals. While some species are widespread, others are endemic to specific islands or regions, making them potentially vulnerable to habitat loss and other environmental changes.
