There are two primary types of emulsions: oil-in-water (O/W) and water-in-oil (W/O). In an O/W emulsion, small droplets of oil are dispersed throughout a continuous water phase. These creams are typically lighter, less greasy, and are easily washed off with water. They are often preferred for daytime use or for oily skin types. In contrast, W/O emulsions have small droplets of water dispersed within a continuous oil phase. These creams are generally richer, more occlusive, and provide a more moisturizing effect, making them suitable for dry skin or for use in colder weather.

The consistency and properties of emulssiovoiteet are influenced by the ratio of oil to water, the type and concentration of emulsifying agents, and the inclusion of other ingredients such as thickeners, humectants, and preservatives.
