Emphasistend is a term used in linguistics and communication studies to describe a cross-modal pattern in which emphasis is systematically anchored toward the end of a discourse unit. The concept synthesizes ideas from prosody, discourse marking, and multimodal communication to explain why final elements, such as words, phrases, or sentences, often carry heightened perceptual salience. The term is a neologism and is used mainly in theoretical discussions and analytic descriptions.

In spoken language, emphasistend tends to manifest as final-stress on a focal element, accompanied by elevated pitch, greater loudness, or longer duration. In writing and typography, it appears as a concentration of emphasis cues—such as bolding, italics, or strategic punctuation—toward the concluding segment of a clause. In video and digital media, emphasis is reinforced through timing, gesture, and visual emphasis that align with the terminal element.

Practically, researchers identify emphasistend by correlating prosodic measurements with syntactic position and with reader or listener responses. Cross-cultural and cross-genre variation exists: some languages or contexts place stronger emphasis on sentence endings, while others distribute emphasis more evenly throughout a discourse segment. The concept helps distinguish end-focused emphasis from other marking strategies like topic or focus marking positioned earlier in an utterance.
