Embryotriggered is a term used in developmental biology to describe processes in which embryogenesis is initiated or guided by an externally supplied trigger rather than by natural fertilization alone. In research, it describes engineered systems that begin embryo-like development from pluripotent cells or early-stage embryos when exposed to defined cues, enabling controlled study of early developmental events.

Common triggers include chemical inducers that activate gene expression programs, optogenetic tools that initiate signaling with light, and environmental cues such as substrate properties or temperature. Inducible genetic circuits turn on regulatory networks guiding cell fate, proliferation, and pattern formation. Optogenetics provides temporal control, while mechanical and biochemical cues influence tissue organization and axis specification.

Applications include embryo-like organoids and gastruloids derived from stem cells, investigation of early patterning and lineage decisions, and advances in regenerative medicine, toxicology screening, and disease modeling. Because these models resemble aspects of embryonic development without using fertilized embryos, they offer platforms for high-throughput studies while reducing ethical concerns.
