An inducer is a molecule that initiates an induction process, typically by increasing the production or activity of a gene product. In biology, inducers can act at the level of transcription, translation, or enzyme expression, and their action may be direct or via signaling pathways. Induction is often distinguished from mere activation of existing enzymes, as it involves synthesis of new protein over time and is usually reversible when the inducer is removed.

In bacterial genetics, inducible systems are classic examples. A repressor bound to an operator prevents transcription; when an inducer binds to the repressor, the repressor changes shape and releases from the DNA, allowing transcription. The lac operon uses allolactose as inducer; IPTG is a synthetic, non-metabolizable inducer. The arabinose operon uses arabinose as inducer.

In eukaryotes, inducers can activate transcription factors or signaling cascades that promote gene expression, often in a tissue- and context-specific manner. Hormones and some drugs can act as inducers, linking physiological signals to changes in gene networks.

In pharmacology, enzyme induction refers to the upregulation of drug-metabolizing enzymes, especially cytochrome P450s, via activation of nuclear receptors such as PXR and CAR. Induction can speed drug clearance and alter effectiveness, leading to drug interactions. Examples include rifampin and phenobarbital; cigarette smoke and certain anticonvulsants; chronic alcohol exposure can induce some enzymes. The onset and offset of induction vary with the system.

Endogenous inducers include developmental signals and metabolic states; some inducers are used in research and biotechnology, such as IPTG in laboratory experiments.
